In today's technology-driven world, social media has become an indispensable tool for communication and connection, particularly among students. Recognising the profound impact of social media on young lives, Aurobindo International School, Sirsi Road, organised an interhouse debate competition on November 29, 2023, for students from Classes VI to IX and XI.
The competition provided a platform for students to engage in a lively and thought-provoking exchange of ideas, exploring the multifaceted ways social media influences their lives. Proponents of social media highlighted its transformative role in fostering communication, collaboration, and self-expression among students. They emphasized its ability to enhance creativity, promote global awareness, and enrich learning experiences.
On the other hand, opponents cautioned against the potential downsides of excessive social media usage. They raised concerns about the pervasiveness of distractions, the risk of addiction, and the potential negative impacts on mental health. They advocated for responsible social media usage, emphasizing the importance of digital literacy education and maintaining a healthy balance between online and offline activities.
Throughout the competition, participants presented compelling evidence to support their arguments, drawing from research, personal experiences, and real-world examples. They delved into critical topics such as cyber bullying, privacy concerns, the impact on academic performance, and the influence of social media on self-esteem and body image.
The captivating debate competition provided students with a valuable opportunity to critically examine the pros and cons of social media, fostering a deeper understanding of its pervasive effects on their lives. It ignited conversations about responsible digital citizenship and the importance of striking a balance between online and offline activities.
The competition concluded with a profound appreciation for the power of social media in shaping students' lives, emphasising the need for on-going discussions and reflections on this ever-evolving topic. The winners of the debate were from Daffodil and Iris house respectively. At the conclusion, the esteemed Director, Dr. Bharat Prashar, and the Principal of the school, Ms. Karuna Nagpal, commended the participants and provided further insights on the topic.
